Christmas is coming! - CakeMixing at The Westin

Christmas is coming! - CakeMixing at The Westin

A cloudy day with a chance of raining dry fruits and nuts! That is not exactly a weather forecast, but it indeed was a cloudy day and a rather pleasant one when The Westin hosted its #CakeMixing event.

Cake Mixing is an age old tradition they say, and I have seen a lot of places doing it quite regularly. People gather up and enjoy the activity of mixing dry fruits and nuts in huge amounts of rum and brandy and wine(at places). These would later be used in cake baking for Christmas.

The staff at The Westin made sure that the guests participated and enjoyed the whole ceremony, which concluded with high tea and snacks. And that was not the end of it, the hotel had also organized a cup-cake decoration competition for under-privileged children with the help of an NGO. Truly a nice gesture!

Ohri's 100 Degrees - from the bloggers' table

I was definitely looking forward to an evening with fellow bloggers over one of my favorite things - sizzlers! And when all of us reached the recently re-opened Ohri's 100 degrees, an elaborate 3 page 'Food Blogger Menu' greeted us. 100 Degrees used to be located at the fag end of necklace road and had always been Ohri's specialty sizzlers restaurant. It had closed down some time back, leaving many sizzlers fans disapointed. It indeed was a pleasant surprise when 100 Degrees re-opened at Hitech city amidst much fervour and anticipation among its fans.

I had an opportunity earlier to sample some veg sizzlers while attending an event, but it was quite unlike today evening when the menu was quite elaborate and we got an opportunity to sample quite a lot of dishes. But first, let me tell you about the place, setting and ambiance. It definitely is huge and airy. The design incorporated on the walls is quite refreshing and the usage of some very familiar items like a bird cage for a lamp, a spotlight disguised as a wooden fan and generous use of artificial flowerpots do add a lot of charm to the place. And yes, you get an apron to protect yourself from the fury of your hot sizzler! Some pics of the interiors and my previous visit has been detailed here Sizzlers @ 100 degrees!

When all of us had settled down, we decided to go for some refreshing drinks first and check out the food menu later. Among those that arrived at our table were cold coffee, Mix of Anu, Chatka Orange, Jeera Maar ke(if I remember it correctly). Yes, they do have some very quirky names for their drinks! Served in humongous(almost literally) earthen pots, they have been quite good so far for all the flavors that I have tried. I generally keep a drink handy which downing sizzlers for that occasional fire fighting, and this was just enough for its size!

The restaurant serves some complimentary buns before they start the service. During my previous visit I had discovered how the in-house mustard sauce adds a zing to these buns and so I did not forget to repeat the same trick this time as well. Say whatever, I am already a fan of their mustard sauce. A generous overdose out of curiosity and I received a punch in my nose - just like what you get from a really good wasabi!

I had kind of despised the 100 Degrees Nachos on my last visit and this time it was kind of better. The cheese had evenly spread out on the nachos and the salsa was decent enough. For me this would still be an okayish dish from the restaurant.

Then came rushing an express train of chicken wings dipped in sauces with different spice levels. It was an express train as we were unable to match up our photography and eating speed with the speed at which all the levels of spiciness were reaching at our table. They serve wings with the following levels;

At 0 Degree - Beginners' Wings(honey mustard)
At 20 Degrees - Smoke Crackel Pop(classic barbeque)
At 40 Degrees - Raise the alarm(Buffalo wings)
At 60 Degrees - WTH! (spicy pepper)
At 80 Degrees - Devil's favorite (Mexican Habanero)
At 100 Degrees - Dial 101 (Bhoot Jolokia)

I liked the honey mustard coated wings. It was exactly honey sweet, but had a good scent of mustard and not spicy at all. The classic barbecue was one flavor I felt I could order anytime I come back in future. Very mildly spiced, with a barbecue sauce and it was bang on with its smoky barbecue flavor. The fourth one - WTH! was something I felt was more spicier than the 5th level. In any case, beyond 4th, its the eyes and nose which do the workout as our taste buds goes numb under the spice influence. I would say they have done a pretty good job with the wings. My only issue - any wings served after level 2 had almost the same color!

After some lip-smacking and lip-burning wings, came the Florida salad and Caesar salad. There was nothing special about these dishes, though I had a bit of inclination for the Caesar salad.

The next page on the menu had an assorted list of fresh dough pizza and we ordered a Margherita, a Tandoori Chicken and a Californian BBQ chicken. The Californian BBQ chicken was something which actually had a good mix of flavors, especially BBQ and with sun dried tomatoes and the fruity flavor of pineapple chunks. But the dough could have been a wee little more baked.

A bit of pasta for us and I liked the 100 degree barbeque paste more than the Alfredo. Needless to say, the 100 Degree barbecue pasta carried the typical barbecue flavor and for a change was quite better than what we had anticipated.

Since we were sampling, we ordered a sizzler for each of us and of a different variety. We got a Hokkaido chicken, a Mixed Grills, Mutton Chops, Coriander fish and a prawns sizzler. The mutton chops was not up to how I had expected it to be. The meat did not have much flavor, but if I let it out of the equation then the rest of the plate was quite decent with fresh veggies and green leaves packed on the it, not to forget the big chunk of finely mashed potatoes.

My favorite was the coriander fish, which really lived up to its name. A decent and definite coriander rush, but not overpowering the fish. It indeed was yum! The Hokkaido chicken  was a stuffed chicken breast with spinach and cheese and it was quite tender. the cheese oozed out the moment I ran my knife across the length. The flavor of spinach and cheese was not really accentuated, instead it complemented the sauce on the sizzler quite well.

The desserts section had a sizzling walnut brownie and a classic apple pie. Since I had tasted the sizzling brownie earlier, I tried the apple pie this time. The pie was really lip smacking indeed. Not sugary and with just the right amount of cinnamon sprinkled, it was a lovely dessert to end a hearty meal of sizzlers.
